A Butterfly with a Big Journey

The monarch butterfly is one of the most iconic pollinators in North America and a key indicator of ecosystem health. Every fall, monarchs migrate thousands of miles to overwinter in Mexico before returning north each spring.

Milkweed is the Key

Monarch caterpillars can only survive on milkweed leaves. Without milkweed there would be no monarchs. Planting native milkweed is one of the most important things we can do to help them. Milkweed blooms also provide nectar for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and many other beneficial insects, making every planting a vibrant pollinator hub.

Fuel for Flight

Adult monarchs need a continuous supply of nectar from spring through fall to power their long migration and reproduction. Native nectar plants such as coneflower, blazing star, goldenrod, and asters provide the rich food they depend on.

How Magical Sprouts Helps

Magical Sprouts Nursery was created to make it simple to bring monarch habitat into your backyard. By planting native milkweed and native wildflowers, you support monarchs, pollinators, and the return of nature’s magic.

How You Can Help

  • Plant native milkweed. It is the only host plant for monarch caterpillars and provides nectar for many pollinators.
  • Add nectar plants. Include native flowers like coneflower, blazing star, goldenrod, and asters to supply food from spring through fall.
  • Skip pesticides. Avoid insecticides and herbicides that harm caterpillars, butterflies, and bees.
  • Leave stems standing. Keep dead plant stems through winter to provide shelter for overwintering insects.
  • Spread the word. Share what you learn and encourage friends, neighbors, and local groups to create monarch-friendly spaces.
